The Ankle
Rebuild

Coming back from an ankle injury is not about proving what you used to be able to do. It is about rebuilding the connection, capacity, and trust to do what matters now.

Built from my own rebuild

Three surgeries. Thirteen screws. Two plates. Eight months non-weight-bearing. I built this guide for my clients ... then I had to use it on myself.

A practical first layer for anyone rebuilding after an ankle injury. The complete guide goes further.

Before we start

The short version.

I do not start with heavy weights because a joint can technically move. I start by finding what stopped working ... then I wake that link up and load it in the right order.

An ankle injury changes more than the ankle. Your nervous system protects the area. Your foot changes how it meets the ground. Your calf, knee, hip, and back start finding ways to keep you moving.

That is one way the Compensation Chain can show up after an ankle injury. In this case, the ankle is the entry point. If I skip it, I am asking the rest of the body to keep covering for it.

The goal is not to live in rehab forever. The goal is to establish the neuromuscular connection, build strength you can control, and return to stairs, hills, sport, work, or daily life without thinking about every step.

The rebuild model

Three parts. One order.

This is the order I use with clients and the order I had to follow myself.

01

Activation

Reconnect the foot, ankle, and calf. Start with controlled work that gives the nervous system a clear signal.

02

Progressive loading

Build the strength and tolerance to handle more. Slow reps, single-leg control, and honest progress.

03

Integration

Put the work back into life ... stairs, hills, uneven ground, training, and the movements you want to trust again.

Still feel unsure on that ankle?

These videos are a start. If it keeps coming back, something up or down the chain is doing the wrong job. Let's find where yours breaks down.

If we are a fit, we will choose the right 16-week program and build the plan around your starting point.

One rule before anything else

This guide sits underneath your surgeon and physical therapist.

If your care team has you in a boot, you stay in the boot. If they say no weight, there is no weight. This page and the full guide fill in the parts they may not have time to cover ... they do not replace medical care.
