What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

The first step in all my services is a complimentary call. This is a chance for us to discuss your goals, needs, and how I can best support you in your wellness journey.

Personal Training: After our initial call, I’ll send you a health history questionnaire through the app. This will help me understand your current health status and fitness levels. Once this is completed, we’ll arrange our first session at a location of your choice—be it a gym or your home or virtual. Here, we’ll develop an exercise program tailored to your specific goals. As this is a lifestyle change, the program will continue to evolve with your progress.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

My educational journey and professional experience have been both comprehensive and multidisciplinary, uniquely positioning me to guide individuals on their wellness paths. To begin with, I have over a decade of experience as a Sous Chef, where I honed my culinary skills and developed an understanding of the importance of nutrition in overall health. In pursuit of a deeper knowledge of fitness and wellness, I earned two degrees in Exercise Science. I hold a Bachelor of Science from the esteemed University of Pittsburgh and an Associate of Science from the Community College of Allegheny County. This blend of culinary expertise and rigorous academic training in exercise science enables me to offer a holistic approach to health and wellness, marrying nutritious food with tailored exercise programs for optimal results.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

My journey into wellness began unexpectedly. For years, I worked tirelessly as a chef, pouring my heart into every dish I prepared. However, the physically demanding nature of the job eventually took a toll on my health, leading to severe back pain. This experience was my first encounter with the health care system, and it opened my eyes to its shortcomings. In the wake of my injury, I realized I needed a deeper understanding of the human body and how it heals. So, I decided to pursue an education in exercise physiology. The course work expanded my knowledge about the mechanics of movement, the importance of physical fitness, and the body’s innate capacity for healing. During this transformative period, I also discovered the healing power of yoga. The blend of physical postures, mindful breathing, and meditation had a profound impact on my recovery, extending far beyond the physical to the mental and emotional realms. Inspired by my personal healing journey and equipped with my newfound knowledge, I decided to use my culinary skills in conjunction with fitness to help others navigate their own health struggles. I wanted to show people that there are proactive and holistic approaches to health, beyond conventional healthcare’s reactive model. This is when the concept of The Healthy Yinzer began to take shape. I started offering personal training, yoga, and Pilates classes, combined with personalized chef services to promote healthy eating. My goal was to educate Pittsburgh’s residents on the importance of a balanced diet and regular exercise. I wanted to empower them with the knowledge and skills to take control of their health and live their best lives. The journey hasn’t been easy, but the transformation I see in my clients’ lives makes it all worthwhile. Today, The Healthy Yinzer stands as a testament to the power of perseverance and the belief that better health is accessible to all.

What types of customers have you worked with?

I’ve had the pleasure of working with a diverse range of clients, from all walks of life, ages, and fitness levels. My clients have ranged from as young as seven up to the spry age of 75. My clientele has included professional athletes aiming to enhance their performance, individuals recovering from surgeries or ligament tears, and women navigating the fitness journey pre or post-pregnancy. I’ve assisted individuals in improving their daily living status, those looking to prevent disease, and those who are invested in their overall health and wellness. In essence, The Healthy Yinzer is dedicated to helping anyone, no matter their age or fitness level, who wishes to improve their health, fitness, and wellbeing. This broad experience has equipped me with the knowledge and skills to tailor my services to meet the unique needs of each client.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

One of the most rewarding projects I recently had the pleasure to work on was with a client recovering from hip surgery. When we first started, he was skeptical about regaining normal mobility in his legs. The task was challenging, but his determination and our combined efforts fueled our journey towards his recovery. Our strategy included a customized fitness regime with a mix of gentle yoga stretches, targeted Pilates exercises, and specific strength training workouts. This multidisciplinary approach aimed at building flexibility, strength, and balance was complemented by nutritional guidance to support his body’s healing process. Over three months, we witnessed his remarkable progress. From struggling with the simplest movements, he gradually regained full range of motion in his legs and can now walk without any limp. The joy and relief he expressed upon reaching this milestone made this project incredibly rewarding for me. It’s experiences like these that validate the holistic approach of The Healthy Yinzer. Healing is not just about the body but also the mind, and empowering individuals to regain control over their lives is a goal I am proud to contribute to.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Firstly, always look for someone who possesses a strong foundation of knowledge and experience. Certified qualifications in areas like exercise physiology, personal training, or nutrition are solid indicators of this expertise. Trustworthiness is key in this field. A transparent approach in their methodology, fair pricing, and authentic client feedback can help you gauge their reliability. They should respect your limits and be receptive to your concerns. Make sure your chosen professional places your goals at the heart of their service. A customized plan that addresses your unique needs – whether it’s weight loss, enhanced fitness, improved nutrition, or stress reduction – is a must. Be wary of those promising instant or easy results. Real, sustainable change takes time and dedication. A responsible wellness provider will always set realistic expectations and guide you towards healthier lifestyle habits. Choose someone who’s personable and approachable. Having a good rapport with your trainer or coach can significantly improve your journey towards wellness. They should foster a supportive, motivating, and comfortable environment for you to thrive in. Lastly, watch out for professionals who seem overly interested in monetary gain rather than your wellbeing. A good service provider should be passionate about helping you achieve your goals, rather than focusing on their financial gain. Your health is an investment that will reap lifelong benefits. Take your time in making the right choice for a service provider who truly aligns with your needs and values.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

Take a look at whether they offer personalized programs or if they adhere to a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach. A tailored program that addresses your unique needs is a crucial aspect of effective wellness coaching. Seek out references or feedback from previous clients. This can give you valuable insights into their reliability, effectiveness, and overall working style. Evaluate their flexibility. An excellent professional should adapt their services to fit your schedule and lifestyle, and ideally, offer virtual sessions if needed. Consider if their values resonate with yours. For instance, if you value holistic wellness, mental health, or sustainable practices, your chosen professional should respect and echo these values. Clear and fair pricing is also essential. They should provide a straightforward pricing structure, with flexible payment options or packages if available.
